The inspiration for Sonoma Antiques and Vintage began in the colorful world of 1960s retail, where stores like Cost Plus, Import Outlet, and The Yellow Submarine offered something magical that today's corporate landscape has largely forgotten. Picture this: psychedelic music drifting through the air, the warm scent of incense, and aisles filled with imported treasures from around the globe, where a child could spend endless time deciding which 10-cent seashell to take home. Those were the days before big box stores dominated, when hippie boutiques and thrift shops flourished in every city and shopping was an adventure of discovery.
I also remember the breathtaking spectacle of department store windows during Christmas season in downtown Oakland and San Francisco. Though my family couldn't afford to buy much, we'd spend hours admiring those elaborate displays, pure artistry that transformed ordinary storefronts into winter wonderlands. The beauty, the craftsmanship, the attention to detail, it was magical in a way that's hard to find today.
